Nature-Inspired Innovation for Future Counter-UAS Systems

This presentation explores how biomimicry and nature-inspired engineering can generate unconventional approaches to Counter-UAS challenges. Drawing inspiration from biological systems that excel at detection, pursuit, interception, maneuverability, and adaptation, Dr. Alain Bujold will demonstrate how studying nature can stimulate new concepts for counter-drone technologies, with a focus on the innovation methodology and how biological principles can inspire the next generation of Counter-UAS solutions.

Dr. Alain L. Bujold, DBA, PhD, is an executive, innovator, researcher, and professor at Monarch Business School Switzerland with three decades of experience leading complex research, development, and innovation programs across defense, security, human performance, and advanced technologies.

Throughout his career, Dr. Bujold has led nearly 150 R&D and new product development initiatives, working at the intersection of operational requirements, engineering, human factors, and technology commercialization. His DBA expertise centers on the management and execution of complex innovation programs, from identifying operational problems and structuring multidisciplinary R&D through prototyping, validation, manufacturing, and implementation.

His PhD research further examines how innovation can be approached when conventional solutions are insufficient. Drawing heavily on biomimicry, observation, geometry, and first-principles thinking, Dr. Bujold specializes in reframing difficult technical problems and identifying unconventional pathways toward practical solutions.

A particular focus of his work is mitigation through geometry, exploring how shape, structure, orientation, and nature-inspired geometries can redirect, dissipate, distribute, or manage energy and other physical effects.

As Founder & CEO of Bujold Innovation LABS19 LLC, he applies this multidisciplinary approach to emerging defense challenges, including Counter-UAS technologies, where unconventional geometry and biomimicry may open entirely new avenues for detection, protection, mitigation, and system design.
